Whether you’re suffering from a bunged up or runny nose, blocked sinuses, headache or aches and pains, a cold can really get you down. But what actually is a cold?
A cold is caused by an infection in your upper respiratory tract caused by a virus. Many of what we call 'common colds’ are caused by rhinoviruses. These are invisible droplets present in the air around us, or on things we touch - which is why they spread so easily. These viruses get into the protective lining of the nose and throat and trigger your immune system to react, causing a cold.
As yet, there’s no cure for a cold, because it’s a virus, so the best you can do is treat the symptoms you have. And to help keep your immune system in tip top condition you should eat a balanced diet, keep your body well hydrated and make sure you get enough sleep - it all helps.
