WHAT IS A COLD?

The common cold is a viral infection causing inflammation of the inner nose, throat and airways. Symptoms include a sore throat, a runny or blocked nose, headache, chesty cough, fever, body aches and pains.

Cold and flu are usually caught by breathing in the virus as particles in the air, produced when a cold or flu sufferer sneezes or coughs. Once inhaled, the body's immune system recognises the virus as an 'invader' and starts protecting against it.

WHAT IS THE FLU?

Flu is the abbreviated name for "influenza" and is similar but sometimes a more serious condition than the common cold, caused by different viruses. The symptoms of flu usually start quite suddenly with a fever followed by shivering, headache and weak or aching muscles which are usually severe enough to confine you to bed. Flu sufferers are likely to have a temperature within the first day and a poor appetite. The fever may last for up to three days but other symptoms can last much longer. Similar symptoms to a cold, such as a cough, sore throat and a blocked or runny nose, are often experienced.
